The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has stated that it is the responsibility of the Ministry of Sports, not the GFA, to make the Black Stars’ budget public.
His comments come in response to President John Dramani Mahama’s directive during the State of the Nation Address on Thursday, February 27. The President instructed the Minister of Sports and Recreation to ensure transparency in the finances of national teams, particularly the Black Stars.
“Next month, the senior national team, the Black Stars, now a shadow of their former selves, will be in action. I have instructed the Minister for Sports and Recreation to hold the GFA accountable, particularly on the budget for the team,” President Mahama stated.
“There will be no secrecy in how much money the government puts into the national team. The budget that is presented by the FA and other associations must be made public because it’s the taxpayers’ money,” he added.
However, Asante Twum clarified that while the GFA prepares and submits the budget, the final decision to disclose it lies with the government.
“Making Black Stars’ budget public is not the responsibility of the Ghana Football Association (GFA). It is the responsibility of the Sports Ministry,” he told Sports FM.
Meanwhile, the Black Stars, following a disappointing performance in 2024, will regroup next month for their Matchday 5 and 6 fixtures in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as they seek to revive their campaign.
