Bundesliga club FC Köln have expressed their confidence in Ghana international Gideon Mensah, believing the left-back will add quality, experience and defensive stability to their squad after completing his long-term move to the German side.
The 27-year-old defender joins Köln as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with French Ligue 1 outfit AJ Auxerre, where he spent four successful seasons.
FC Köln sporting director Thomas Kessler revealed that the club had been following Mensah’s progress for some time before eventually securing his signature.
“We have been monitoring Gideon for quite some time and are delighted that we have been able to bring him to FC. He brings international experience, delivered strong performances in France last season and confirmed that quality at the World Cup,” Kessler said.
Mensah arrives in Germany with a growing reputation after an impressive showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in every minute of Ghana’s four matches during the tournament.
The Black Stars defender was one of Ghana’s most consistent performers as the team reached the Round of 32 before being eliminated by Colombia in a narrow 1-0 defeat.
His move to FC Köln comes after an impressive spell at Auxerre. He initially joined the French club on loan in 2021 before making the transfer permanent a year later, establishing himself as a reliable figure in the team’s defence.
During the 2025/26 Ligue 1 campaign, Mensah made 30 league appearances, providing two assists while playing a key role as Auxerre successfully avoided relegation.
Known for his pace, defensive awareness, work rate and ability to contribute in attack, Mensah is expected to compete for a starting role at Köln and provide valuable Bundesliga experience to the squad.
The Ghanaian defender becomes one of only a handful of Ghanaian players to represent FC Köln, following in the footsteps of Anthony Baffoe, Edward Sarpei, Derek Boateng and Kingsley Schindler.
With his international pedigree and recent World Cup experience, FC Köln will hope Mensah can become an important figure as the club looks to strengthen its squad for the upcoming Bundesliga campaign.
