A Ghanaian footballer who plies his trade in the Ukraine Premier League with Vorskla Poltava has revealed how scary the situation is in Ukraine after the Russia attacks and wants to return to Ghana as he fears for his life.

Russian has invaded Eastern Ukraine in an attempt to prevent Ukraine from joining the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. 100,000 Ukrainians have fled their homes with several others crossing into neighbouring countries after the Russians launched an attack today on Ukraine.

Najeeb Yakubu, who played for the Black Starlets and the Black Satellites of Ghana says he is stranded in Poltava, a city that is only an hour drive from where the Russian invasion took place.

Speaking Starr FM’s Sports Today, the 21 year old defender told host Benjamin Yamoah that nothing is working in Ukraine.

“My club had asked us (players) to stay home, nothing is working actually. No cars, no train, no bus, the banks are not working, the restaurants are not working” he said.

Asked about how he is feeling he revealed staying in Ukraine while the unrest is ongoing is really a tough one for him and wants to return home.

“It is very hard but what can we do? There is no option. You just have to keep your head, we just want to go home but how can we if the government does not help us?” It is like a movie to me” he said.

Yakubu pleaded on the Government of Ghana to help them to get back home though he hasn’t heard from anyone.

“I have not heard from the Government till now. During the period of the coronavirus pandemic in Ukraine we didn’t hear from them, how much more the war? They should just try and help us. We just want to go home. Take us to the closet border. If it gets worse, we can’t go anywhere.” He said.

The Ukrainian football League has been halted for a minimum of 30 days after the full scale invasion.
