“We need to qualify for the 2026 World Cup” – Asamoah Gyan backs Black Stars

Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has thrown his full support behind the Black Stars, emphasizing the importance of securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after their emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in Accra.

The four-time African champions put on a dominant display at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday night, climbing to the top of Group I with 12 points from five matches. The victory not only boosted Ghana’s chances of reaching the global showpiece but also reaffirmed their status as a strong contender in the qualifiers.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals, played an active role in encouraging the team ahead of the Chad clash. The 39-year-old, who remains Africa’s highest scorer at the FIFA World Cup with six goals, visited the Black Stars’ training sessions before the match, a move that was met with widespread appreciation from fans.

Speaking after the game, Gyan expressed optimism about the team’s journey toward qualification, urging the squad to maintain their focus.

“This is just the beginning. The most important thing is that we have the three points,” Gyan told **GH Hyper**. “We need to qualify for the World Cup—that is our main objective. We take it game by game and see what happens. The most important thing is that Ghanaians are happy with the result, and we keep moving forward.”

With their latest win, Ghana now sits two points ahead of second-placed Madagascar, who have 10 points. Comoros follows closely in third with nine points after suffering a 3-0 defeat to Mali, who remain fourth with eight points. Central African Republic occupies fifth place with four points.

The Black Stars’ next challenge is a crucial away match against Madagascar on Monday, March 24. Due to venue constraints in Madagascar, the game will be played in Morocco, adding another layer of complexity to Ghana’s qualification campaign.

As the race for a World Cup spot intensifies, Gyan’s backing provides both motivation and reassurance for a team eager to return to the global stage after missing out on the 2018 edition.
