Member of Parliament for Dormaa West and former Deputy Sports Minister, Vincent Oppong Asamoah has shared his opinion on Ghana’s failure in the 2023 AFCON.
In an interview on Sompa FM in Sunyani, the MP revealed what he proposed after the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil but was not even given a second thought.
“We have to reduce the amount of money we give to the Black Stars so anyone who thinks the money is not enough should go away”, said the minister who proposed that idea.
“We should select players who are motivated enough to play for the Black Stars but not those who are only interested in the monetary benefit”, added the Dormaa West Member of Parliament, Oppong Asamoah.
The former Deputy Sports Minister revealed what happened after the Brazil World Cup in 2014 when Avram Grant was about to be in charge of the Black Stars.
“After the 2014 embarrassing World Cup in Brazill, I proposed the idea that we should stop paying the $10k winning bonus. We must pay the players $5k as a winning bonus instead of the $10k and also we must pay just $20k for the players as an appearance fee instead of the $100k.
“I was bashed by the media when I said this but Countryman Songo alone supported me”, disclosed the former minister.
“We should turn our attention to the local players who play regularly. I wondered what was wrong with some of our players during the 2023 AFCON.
“Chris Houghton selected players who didn’t deserve to play at the expense of those who deserved to play all because they did not have anyone to force the coach to use them”, added Oppong Vincent.
Ghana failed abysmally in the Ivory Coast and total changes are needed from top to bottom before the team can return to winning ways.
