“We want to qualify for the World Cup” – GFA sets clear target for Black Queens

The Ghana Football Association has set its sights firmly on qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, with the Black Queens targeting progress at this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Ghana have been drawn in a tough group alongside Cameroon, Mali and Cape Verde, following last week’s draw held in Morocco.

Speaking to exclusively to Citi Sports on Monday January 30, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum says the Queens are determined to build on their bronze-medal finish at the last edition and take a decisive step forward on the continental stage.

We’ve got two things on our mind going into this tournament,” Asante Twum said. “First, we want to qualify for the World Cup. Then, we also want to fight for the title.

The Black Queens finished third at the previous WAFCON under head coach Kim Lars Björkegren, narrowly missing out on a place in the final after losing to hosts Morocco in the semi-finals.

We came very, very close,” he added. “Within a year, we believe we should be able to go a step further. But it will be one step at a time.

Asante Twum acknowledged the difficulty of the group but expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and familiarity with their opponents.

We are in a very tight group with teams we have faced before. We know what they bring to the table, and we are well prepared for the challenge.

He also pointed to sustained investment in women’s football as a key factor behind the team’s growing confidence and improved performances.

With the kind of investment we have made in the women’s game, we are not surprised that the quality is beginning to show on the field,” he said. “We believe in the technical team, and we believe we have assembled a very strong squad.

Despite Ghana’s rich history in women’s football, the Black Queens are yet to lift a continental trophy—something the FA remains determined to change.

“We will leave no stone unturned. We will continue to invest, motivate and push these players to go all the way,” Asante Twum stressed. “We believe that when the tournament comes, the girls will make Ghanaians proud.
