Kojo Oppong Peprah, Derrick Luckassen, Jerome Opoku, Abdul Mumin and Jonas Adjetey have emerged as some of Ghana’s strongest centre-back options as the Black Stars continue preparations towards the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

With the tournament drawing closer, discussions among football enthusiasts and analysts have intensified over who should form Ghana’s ideal defensive partnership. The abundance of quality defenders available to the national team has created healthy competition, giving the technical team several reliable options at the heart of defence.

Kojo Oppong Peprah has earned praise for his commanding presence, aerial strength and ability to organize the backline. His consistency at club level has made him one of the defenders many supporters believe deserves a prominent role in the national team setup.

Derrick Luckassen also remains a valuable option due to his experience, physical strength and versatility. His ability to read the game and handle pressure situations has positioned him as a dependable figure capable of bringing stability to Ghana’s defence.

Jerome Opoku continues to impress with his composure on the ball and strong defensive awareness. His growing experience in European football has enhanced his reputation as one of the country’s most promising defenders, capable of contributing both defensively and during build-up play.

Abdul Mumin has equally strengthened his case for a regular starting position through a series of impressive performances. Known for his aggression, tactical discipline and ability to win crucial duels, he has become one of the most talked-about defenders available to the Black Stars.

Jonas Adjetey, one of the younger names among the contenders, has shown remarkable maturity and confidence. His rapid development and strong performances have attracted attention, with many observers viewing him as a defender capable of playing a significant role in Ghana’s future.

The availability of these defenders presents a positive challenge for the Black Stars technical team. Rather than struggling to find quality options, Ghana now boasts multiple centre-backs with different strengths and playing styles, allowing coaches to select partnerships based on tactical requirements and the quality of opposition.

Football analysts believe the eventual choice of a defensive pairing could depend on factors such as current form, fitness levels, experience and chemistry between players. While some combinations may offer greater physicality, others could provide better ball distribution and tactical flexibility.

As Ghana intensifies preparations for the World Cup, competition for places in the starting lineup is expected to become even stronger. The battle for the centre-back positions could ultimately help raise performance levels within the squad and strengthen the team’s chances of making a significant impact on the global stage.

With several talented defenders available, the Black Stars appear well-equipped defensively ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leaving supporters eager to see which partnership will earn the trust of the coaching staff when the tournament finally begins.
