World Cup 2026 Preview: England vs Croatia – Team News, Predicted Lineups and Prediction

England will launch their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign with a heavyweight Group L showdown against Croatia at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Wednesday, as both nations look to make an early statement in one of the tournament’s most competitive groups.

Match Preview

The Three Lions arrive in North America carrying the hopes of a nation desperate to end a 60-year wait for World Cup glory. Under Thomas Tuchel, England breezed through qualification, becoming the first European nation to secure their place at the tournament after winning all eight matches without conceding a goal.

However, recent friendly results have raised questions about whether England can finally go all the way. Draws and defeats against Uruguay and Japan exposed some vulnerabilities before victories over New Zealand and Costa Rica restored confidence ahead of the tournament.

With stars such as Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice leading the charge, England are widely regarded as one of the strongest squads in the competition. Kane remains the focal point of the attack, while Bellingham is expected to play a key creative role behind the captain.

Croatia, meanwhile, continue to defy expectations on the world stage. Runners-up in 2018 and third-place finishers in 2022, the Vatreni have established themselves as one of international football’s most consistent tournament teams.

Although Zlatko Dalić’s side endured a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, they responded with an impressive World Cup qualifying run, dropping just two points in eight matches to comfortably secure top spot in their group.

Veteran captain Luka Modrić remains the heartbeat of the Croatian midfield, while Joško Gvardiol, Mateo Kovačić and Ivan Perišić provide the experience and quality needed to challenge the world’s best.

This fixture also revives memories of Croatia’s famous 2-1 victory over England in the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, a result that denied the Three Lions a place in the final. England, however, have gone unbeaten in the three meetings since that defeat and will be eager to gain another measure of revenge.

Team News

England have no major injury concerns, although Bukayo Saka remains a doubt after struggling with fitness issues. Noni Madueke could be handed a starting role if the Arsenal winger is unavailable.

Jude Bellingham is expected to start in the attacking midfield role behind Harry Kane, while John Stones should marshal the defence alongside Ezri Konsa.

Croatia have a fully fit squad available, with Modrić and Perišić set to start. MLS-based striker Petar Musa is pushing for a place in attack after an impressive goalscoring run in the United States.

Predicted Lineups

England: Pickford; James, Stones, Konsa, O’Reilly; Anderson, Rice; Madueke, Bellingham, Gordon; Kane.

Croatia: Livaković; Šutalo, Vušković, Gvardiol; Stanišić, Modrić, Kovačić, Perišić; Sučić, Baturina; Musa.

Prediction

Croatia’s tournament pedigree means they should never be underestimated, but England possess greater attacking depth and arrive with a point to prove. Expect a closely fought encounter, with the Three Lions having enough quality to edge the contest.

Prediction: England 2-1 Croatia.
