Gillette Stadium is set to stage one of the most intriguing Round of 32 encounters at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the Netherlands face Morocco in a high-stakes knockout battle on Monday.

Both sides arrive in strong form, having finished their group campaigns unbeaten on seven points, setting up a clash that promises quality, intensity, and tactical intrigue.

Match Preview

Netherlands national football team topped Group F after a composed and efficient group stage display, beginning with a 2-2 draw against Japan before securing back-to-back victories over Sweden and Tunisia.

Ronald Koeman’s side have impressed offensively, scoring 10 goals in the tournament so far, underlining their status as one of the most dangerous attacking teams at the 2026 World Cup. Despite their rich football history, the Dutch are still chasing a first World Cup title, having finished runners-up in 1974, 1978, and 2010, and third in 2014.

Their last appearance in the knockout stages saw them reach the quarter-finals in 2022, and another deep run is firmly in their sights.

On the other hand, Morocco national football team continue to build on their growing reputation as one of Africa’s strongest international sides.

The Atlas Lions finished second in Group C behind Brazil, collecting seven points from three matches after drawing 1-1 with Brazil, edging Scotland 1-0, and defeating Haiti 4-2.

Morocco famously reached the semi-finals at the 2022 World Cup, and their performances in this tournament suggest they are once again capable of making a serious run.

Team News

Netherlands will be boosted by the return of key players Denzel Dumfries and Brian Brobbey, both of whom had been doubts due to minor knocks. Micky van de Ven is expected to return at left-back, with Nathan Aké likely to drop to the bench.

Cody Gakpo and Brian Brobbey are expected to lead the attack, with Memphis Depay among the options available from the bench.

Morocco are also expected to make several changes, with Noussair Mazraoui, Issa Diop, Azzedine Ounahi, and Ayyoub Bouaddi all pushing for starts.

Ismael Saibari remains their standout attacking threat, having scored three goals in three matches, while Achraf Hakimi and Brahim Díaz are expected to play key roles in supporting the attack.

Predicted Lineups

Netherlands: Verbruggen; Dumfries, Van Dijk, Van Hecke, Van de Ven; Gravenberch, De Jong, Reijnders; Malen, Brobbey, Gakpo

Morocco: Bono; Hakimi, Diop, Riad, Mazraoui; El Aynaoui, Bouaddi; Brahim Díaz, Ounahi, El Khannouss; Saibari

Head-to-Head & Form

The Netherlands have historically dominated this fixture, winning their only World Cup meeting in 1994 by 2-1. However, Morocco’s rise in recent years suggests a far more competitive contest this time around.

  • Netherlands form (all competitions): DLWDWW
  • Morocco form (all competitions): WWDDWW

Prediction

This promises to be a tightly contested knockout tie between two confident, well-balanced teams. The Netherlands may carry more attacking depth, but Morocco’s defensive structure and tournament resilience could prove decisive once again.

Prediction: Netherlands 1-2 Morocco
