Barcelona winger Jesse Bisiwu has refused to rule out representing Ghana at senior international level, admitting the possibility remains open despite his current commitment to Belgium’s Under-21 national team.
The highly-rated 18-year-old is eligible to play for the Black Stars through his Ghanaian heritage but has represented Belgium at every youth level and is currently on international duty with the Belgian U21 side.
The Ghana Football Association has reportedly been monitoring the teenager closely and has made efforts to convince him to switch his international allegiance. However, Bisiwu insists his immediate focus is on helping Belgium’s youth team succeed.
“In the future you never know, but right now the focus is on the U21s and winning games,” Bisiwu told RTL Sports.
While the winger stopped short of committing to Ghana, his remarks will provide encouragement to Black Stars supporters, as FIFA regulations would still allow him to change his international allegiance before making a competitive senior appearance for Belgium.
Bisiwu’s stock has risen significantly following his move to Barcelona, with the Spanish giants securing his signature from Belgian side Club Brugge in July after reviving their interest in the player. Barcelona had initially attempted to sign the exciting winger during the January transfer window before successfully completing the deal in the summer.
The pacey attacker impressed during the club’s pre-season preparations after training with Barcelona’s first team, showcasing the qualities that made him one of Belgium’s brightest young prospects.
To aid his development, Bisiwu has been integrated into Barça Atlètic, where he is expected to gain regular competitive minutes as he continues his progression towards first-team football.
Barcelona are understood to have high hopes for the youngster, with the club reportedly putting in place a five-year development plan aimed at nurturing his talent and preparing him for a future role at the Camp Nou.
For Ghana, Bisiwu remains one of several foreign-born talents on the Black Stars’ radar. Should his development continue on its current trajectory, the winger could become a major target for the Ghana Football Association as they seek to strengthen the national team with emerging talents from Europe’s top clubs.
