Algeria were defeated for the first time for more than three years as Equatorial Guinea stunned the reigning Africa champions on Sunday during a Group E encounter.
Esteban Fernandez scored in the 70th minute as Algeria failed to equalize in the 20 minutes that followed the opener.
This is the first big surprise of this competition. This defeat stopped the North Africans at game number 35 without defeat. They won 25 games and drew 10 in that run.
Algeria had hoped to dethrone Italy who hold the world record of longest unbeaten run (37 matches)
but the 2021 AFCON has not been good to the team of Riyad Mahrez and co as they lie bottom of their group with just a point after two matches.
The Champions of Africa are in danger of going out of the competition after the group play as they face Ivory Coast on January 20th.
