The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon kicked off their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-1 victory against Burkina Faso during the opening match of the tournament on Sunday evening.
Cameroon, five-time winners of the AFCON, came from a goal down in the 27th minute to take the lead by the end of the first half as captain Vincent Aboubakar scored a penalty brace in the 40th and 45th minutes.
France Ligue 2 player Gustavo Sangare connected home a Betrand Traore cross to put the Burkinabes ahead but some naive defending saw them surrender to the hosts having conceded two quick penalties.
In the other group A game, Cape Verde beat Ethiopia by 1-0 thanks to Julio Tavares’s header at the stroke of half time on the service of Gary Rodrigues.
