A solitary strike from Hakim Ziyech marked the end of Zambia’s journey, securing victory for Morocco and ensuring their top position in the group, while Ivory Coast secured a Last 16 spot.

Entering the game, Zambia understood the gravity of a potential loss, while Morocco aimed to lead the group standings. For DR Congo and Tanzania, the pathway to the knockout stages was clear – secure three points.

The match kicked off with high intensity, both Chipolopolo and Morocco eager for an early goal. Despite the fervor, the first on-target attempt occurred after 30 minutes when Lameck Banda’s shot was safely caught by Youssef Bono.

Morocco earned a free-kick in the 35th minute, courtesy of Azzadine Ounahi’s foul. Hakim Ziyech’s delivery found Nayef Aguerd’s head, but the attempt went wide. The breakthrough for the Atlas Lions came in the 38th minute, as Achraf Hakimi’s cross was saved, only for Ziyech to capitalize on the rebound – 1-0.

El Kaabi’s header nearly made it 2-0 in the 39th minute, but Zambian goalkeeper Tresford Mulenga produced a commendable save. Morocco led 1-0 at halftime, while the DR Congo vs. Tanzania match remained goalless.

The second half commenced with Morocco maintaining pressure on Zambia, seeking a decisive second goal. Zambia, however, began creating opportunities, with Lameck Banda narrowly missing the chance to level the score in the 58th minute.

As the game progressed, the intensity waned, influenced by the rising heat. Zambia, despite efforts, struggled to make significant headway, exemplified by Lubumbo Musonda’s off-target shot in the 78th minute.

In the end, Zambia’s endeavors fell short as they finished third in the group with only two points. Meanwhile, DR Congo secured qualification in second place after a goalless draw with Tanzania.
