DR Congo successfully advanced to the knockout stage of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, securing their spot with a goalless draw against Tanzania in Korhogo. Unfortunately, Tanzania’s dreams of progressing were dashed as they needed a win to move forward in the tournament.
The Leopards earned the second position in Group F, following Morocco, who claimed the top spot with a 1-0 victory over Zambia. DR Congo’s next challenge awaits them in the last-16 stage against Egypt, while Morocco is set to face South Africa.
The outcomes in Group F also paved the way for Ivory Coast, the tournament hosts, to sneak into the second round as one of the four best third-placed teams.
The match between DR Congo and Tanzania was marked by a lack of clear chances, resulting in a rather dull encounter. Despite the fervent support for DR Congo from their enthusiastic fans, neither team came close to breaking the deadlock.
During the opening period, DR Congo had better opportunities, with Gael Kakuta and Fiston Mayele creating notable chances. Kakuta’s free-kick and Mayele’s attempt were thwarted by Tanzania’s goalkeeper Aishi Manula. Additionally, Yoane Wissa, after receiving a clever through ball from Kakuta, scuffed his shot.
Tanzania’s captain, Mbwana Samatta, had their best effort with a spin in the box, firing over from a tight angle. The second half saw fewer chances until Wissa, late in the game, tested Manula with a chip and later missed a shot after a corner scramble.
The match ended in a goalless draw, securing Tanzania’s first-ever Nations Cup clean sheet but leaving them winless in nine tournament matches, finishing at the bottom of their group.
DR Congo, two-time winners, showcased their prowess by reaching the knockout stage for the fifth time in their last six appearances at the finals. Their next challenge against Egypt holds promise, especially with Egypt missing key player Mohamed Salah. The encounter is scheduled for Sunday in San Pedro at 20:00 GMT.
