Black Satellites forward Jerry Afriyie has capped off an impressive performance at the WAFU Zone B U-20 Championship in Lomé, Togo, by claiming both the Goal King and Most Valuable Player awards.
After securing their qualification for the CAF U-20 Cup of Nations, Ghana and Nigeria faced off in a thrilling final on Wednesday, with the Flying Eagles edging out the Black Satellites 2-1 to claim the championship.
Afriyie, representing Thoughts FC, emerged as a standout player throughout the tournament, netting five goals and solidifying his role as Ghana’s top performer. He opened the tournament with a brace against Benin and continued his scoring streak with goals against Togo, Côte d’Ivoire in the semi-final, and a final goal in the last match against Nigeria.
Widely regarded as a worthy recipient of the Goal King and Overall Best Player awards, Afriyie’s skill and determination were apparent to all who followed the tournament. His form has been exceptional since joining the Ghana U-20 team, including a stellar performance at the 13th African Games in March, where he scored three times, including a memorable winner against Uganda in the final to clinch gold for Ghana.
With their runner-up finish, the Black Satellites have now secured a place in the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations, alongside champions Nigeria.
