Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has expressed confidence in his team’s ability to prevent goals from long balls, a problem that has troubled them in recent matches.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Angola, set for Thursday, September 5, at 16:00 GMT at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi, Addo assured fans that the issue has been addressed.
In the pre-match press conference, Addo acknowledged the defensive lapses that led to two goals conceded from long balls in Ghana’s recent 4-3 victory over the Central African Republic during a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier. However, he believes that the team has made the necessary adjustments.
“We had problems with that [conceding from long balls]. It’s not particularly easy to work specifically on that because we just had three days of training. It’s more about technical things in general, individual tactics which we have to improve, and we addressed it. I’m convinced this won’t happen again,” Addo stated.
The match against Angola is the first of a two-legged tie, with Ghana determined to start strong despite the absence of regular defensive starter Alexander Djiku, who is sidelined due to an injury sustained while playing for Fenerbahçe in the Turkish league.
