Paraguay have produced one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after eliminating four-time champions Germany in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in the Round of 32.
Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead before Kai Havertz restored parity for Germany in the second half. The match remained level through extra time after Germany had a goal ruled out by VAR.
In the penalty shootout, Havertz, Nick Woltemade, and Jonathan Tah all missed from the spot, allowing José Canale to score the decisive penalty and send Paraguay through.
The victory marks Paraguay’s first World Cup knockout win over Germany and ends the Germans’ campaign in the Round of 32. Paraguay will now face the winner of the Round of 32 clash between France and Sweden in the Round of 16.
