Hugo Broos is on course to enjoy another world cup fever since 1986. He was part of the Belgium squad that finished fourth under Guy Thys in the Mexico 86 World Cup. Bafana Bafana’s head coach has been more than impressive since taking over the role as the head coach in 2021.

In the 2023 AFCON, South Africa finished 3rd and has every chance to play their first World Cup in 16 years. Bafana Bafana last played in the Mundial in 2010 when they hosted it.

The team had never been anywhere near good until Broos took charge four years ago. In round 6 of the FIFA World Cup qualifiers, South Africa won 2-0 against Benin. The first half was dominated by Hugo Broos’ side after far dominating possession and having more shots on target than Benin. It was a matter of when exactly the first goal was goiing to arrive in the second half.

Second half goals from Lyle Foster and Jayden Adams in the 53rd and 84th minutes respectively. The win has helped Bafana Bafana extend their lead to five points after Nigeria, Rwanda and Benin all failed to win.

South Africa has won four games out of the six and everything points to the fact that they are the better team among the 6. The 10 goals scored makes them so dangerous than Nigeria even though the Super Eagles have big names.

Group C is now South Africa’s to lose after six games played. Hugo Broos deserves all the credit for turning things around for South Africa. South Africa will return to action in September with a trip to Lesotho and a decider at home against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
