Hearts of Oak goalkeeper Benjamin Asare marked his Black Stars debut with a clean sheet, impressing on his first appearance for the senior national team.
The 32-year-old earned his first call-up after standout performances in the ongoing 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season, where he kept 12 clean sheets in 18 matches.
Asare’s call-up ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers saw him entrusted with the starting role in the Matchday five fixture against Chad last Friday at the Accra Sports Stadium. This bold decision by the technical team, which saw Asare start over Lawrence Ati Zigi and Jojo Wollacott, paid off as Ghana secured a commanding 5-0 victory to claim the top spot in their qualifying group.
The following Monday, Asare kept his place in goal for the match against Madagascar at the Al Hoceima Grand Stadium in Morocco. Ghana triumphed 3-0, with Thomas Partey netting a brace and Mohammed Kudus adding a third. With this victory, Ghana extended their lead in Group I with 15 points, while Madagascar, in second place, has 10 points.
With two clean sheets in as many games, Asare’s performances against Chad and Madagascar have cemented his position as a strong contender for the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper role.
Looking ahead, Ghana will face Chad away and host Mali in September for Matchdays seven and eight of the qualifiers.
