2026 WCQ: ”This is just the beginning” – Asamoah Gyan hails Black Stars’ dominant win over Chad, calls for focus in remaining games

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan believes the Black Stars’ emphatic 5-0 victory over Chad in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers has set the stage for further positive results as they push for a place in the tournament.

Ghana delivered a commanding performance at a fully packed Accra Sports Stadium on Friday night, securing three crucial points that propelled them to the top of Group I. The four-time African champions now lead the standings with 12 points from five matches.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer with 51 goals, had been spotted at the team’s training session earlier in the week, showing his support for the squad. His presence and encouragement drew praise from fans, who lauded his continued commitment to the national team.

Speaking after the match, the 39-year-old—who holds the record as Africa’s highest goal scorer in FIFA World Cup history with six goals—expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance but urged them to stay focused on the bigger goal.

“This is just the beginning. The most important thing is that we have the three points,” Gyan told GH Hyper. “Our objective is to qualify for the World Cup. That’s our motive, so we take it game by game and see what happens. The most important thing is that Ghanaians are happy with the result, and we keep moving forward.”

With Madagascar defeating Comoros 3-0, Ghana now holds a two-point lead at the top of the group. Madagascar sits second with 10 points, while Comoros is third with nine. Mali’s victory over Comoros moved them to fourth place with eight points, while Central African Republic remains fifth with four.

The Black Stars will now turn their attention to their next crucial fixture against second-placed Madagascar on Monday, March 24. The match will be played in Morocco due to Madagascar’s lack of a FIFA-approved home venue.
