Zambia and Congo kick off Group E of the World Cup qualifiers as they face each other at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium on Friday.
Zambia concluded their friendly matches for the year on October 17 with a convincing 3-0 win over Uganda. Patson Daka shone with two goals, complemented by Fashion Sakala’s strike. The Chipolopolo are on a six-game unbeaten streak, securing their seventh COSAFA Cup title in July and topping their AFCON qualifiers group.
Ranked 81st globally, Zambia aims to extend their impressive home record, having won their last four matches. Despite past World Cup qualifying near-misses, they aspire to secure their maiden appearance in 2026.
Congo, after an underwhelming AFCON qualifying campaign, finished third in Group G. Their recent struggles include a 2-2 draw against Gambia, emphasizing their difficulty in maintaining leads. With just two wins in their last six matches, Congo faces a challenging start to their World Cup qualification journey.
Zambia’s 25-player squad includes key figures like Daka, Sakala, and the return of Brian Mwila. However, Frankie Musonda and Kelvin Kapumbu are sidelined due to injuries.
Congo’s 21-man squad features experienced players Prestige Mboungou, Wolfrigon Mongondza, and Antoine Makoumbou. Young Boys striker Ganvoula leads the attack, supported by Makoumbou and Makouta in midfield. New faces include Christ Makosso, Alain Ipiele, Christopher Ibayi, and goalkeeper Melvin Douniama.
