On Sunday, April 23, 2023, the plane carrying the Arsenal Women’s team caught fire on the runway at Braunschweig Wolfsburg Airport in Germany, forcing the pilot to abandon takeoff.

The team had just finished playing against Wolfsburg in the UEFA Women’s Champions League and were preparing to leave when the engine malfunctioned. Fortunately, the club confirmed that no one was injured as all the players were evacuated safely.

The team had to cancel their return trip and left Germany on Monday, April 24, 2023.

Arsenal released a statement thanking the aircraft and ground staff for their assistance during the incident.

Arsenal drew 2-2 with Wolfsburg in their semi-final first leg, with the second leg scheduled for May 1, 2023, at the Emirates Stadium.
