In a historic achievement, Morocco emerged victorious in the TotalEnergies U-23 Africa Cup of Nations, claiming their first-ever title after an intense encounter against Egypt.
The thrilling match took place at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat and required extra time to determine the winner, with Morocco ultimately prevailing 2-1.
Egypt initially took the lead in the ninth minute when Mahmoud Saber showcased his brilliance with a stunning curling shot into the top corner, granting his team an early advantage. However, Saber’s joy was short-lived as he received a red card only eight minutes later for a reckless challenge on Abdessamad Ezzalzouli.
Despite being a man down, Egypt exhibited resilience and managed to defend their lead for the remainder of regular time. Nevertheless, their defense faltered in the 37th minute, allowing Yanis Begraoui to equalize for the host nation.
With the scores level after the first and second halves, the match entered extra time. It was during the first half of the additional period that Morocco seized control, surging ahead and putting Egypt in a trailing position for the first time in the competition.
Substitute Oussamna Targhalline capitalized on a free kick from Ezzalzouli, delivering a powerful strike that eluded the Egyptian goalkeeper, resulting in a 2-1 lead for Morocco.
Despite Egypt’s efforts to secure a late equalizer, Morocco held firm and secured their victory, clinching the TotalEnergies U-23 AFCON trophy for the first time in their history.
Both Morocco and Egypt have secured qualification for next year’s Olympic Games in Paris, joining Mali, who earned their spot after defeating Guinea in the third-place playoff. Guinea still has an opportunity to secure the fourth African spot in the Olympic Games, but they must win a playoff against an Asian opponent yet to be determined.
