Opoku Nti urges GFA to introduce oldies league on GPL matchdays to entice supporters to stadium

Samuel Opoku Nti, a revered figure in Asante Kotoko’s history, has proposed an innovative idea to the Ghana Football Association: the introduction of a league exclusively for retired footballers in Ghana.

The former Asante Kotoko player believes that implementing such a league would have multiple benefits, including attracting more supporters to the stadium during Ghana Premier League matchdays.

During a discussion on Kessben TV, Opoku Nti elaborated on the concept, suggesting that these retired players’ games could serve as exciting curtain raisers for the BetPawa Premier League matches on matchdays.

Expressing his delight at witnessing some of his former teammates coming together, he expressed hope that the Ghana Football Association could organize a league of this nature.

“I was happy to see some of the old players I played with come together like. I hope the GFA can organize such kind of league.

Addressing the potential financial aspect of such an initiative, Opoku Nti proposed dividing the league into zones. For instance, teams in Accra could participate in their own zone, where the retired players’ league games would be scheduled as curtain raisers before the kickoff of the main league matches. This, he believes, would provide excellent entertainment for the fans and ultimately attract more supporters to the stadium.

“If it is a financial problem, it must be played in zones. For those in Accra, for example, if the teams are playing a league game, they will play a curtain raiser before the kickoff and it will serve as good entertainment. Things like this will definitely entice supporters to the stadium” Opoku said on Kessben TV

Opoku Nti’s idea presents a promising opportunity to celebrate the legacy of retired footballers while adding a new dimension of excitement to matchdays, fostering greater interest and enthusiasm among football fans in Ghana.
