Media reports has it that Ghana Premier League side, Karela United is poised to undergo a significant change ahead of the 2023/24 season. The club, currently based in Anyinase, is set to be relocated to the Northern Region of Ghana.
The catalyst behind this move is Haruna Iddrisu, a prominent Ghanaian politician, who acquired ownership of Karela United in December 2022, during the break of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League for the World Cup in Qatar.
In a subsequent interview, the former Minority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament confirmed the acquisition and shared his aspirations to elevate the club to new heights. While he had purchased the club, the actual takeover was yet to happen, and the prospect of moving it to his native region meant that he was now assuming leadership of the team.
Haruna Iddrisu, who represents the Tamale South constituency in Parliament, stated, “It’s true I bought Karela… we will do our best to put the club forward.”
Prior to this ownership transition, Karela United had faced financial challenges following the passing of its former owner, Senator David Brigidi, in 2018. The Nigerian senator had acquired the club in October 2013 and rebranded it from Metro Stars to Karela FC.
With the acquisition by Haruna Iddrisu and the impending relocation, Karela United looks poised for a new chapter in its history, carrying the hopes and ambitions of its new owner as it prepares for the upcoming football season in Ghana.
