2023 AFCON: ‘Cape Verde beat us with two sloppy goals’ – Ghana’s Jordan Ayew

Ghana’s Jordan Ayew took a reflective stance on the Black Stars’ unfortunate 2-1 loss to Cape Verde in the opening game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The defeat, fueled by goals from Jamiro Monteiro and Garry Rodrigues, left the West African powerhouse grappling with disappointment.

Cape Verde seized the lead in the 17th minute when Monteiro capitalized on a rebound from Richard Ofori’s parry of a long shot. The Black Stars, however, swiftly responded, equalizing through Fenerbache defender Alexander Djiku, only to succumb to a late winner from Rodrigues due to defensive lapses.

In the aftermath, Ayew candidly admitted to the team’s missed opportunities, emphasizing the impact of lapses in concentration and defensive vulnerabilities. “We always lack concentration at key moments, and they [Cape Verde] scored sloppy goals,” Ayew lamented, acknowledging the need for a swift team recovery. He added, “As a team, we need to bounce back quickly. We can’t keep saying it’s a young team; we’ve been together for two years now.”

Optimism blended with a sense of urgency as Ayew emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive outlook despite the setback. “We have two more games left, and we must stay positive. We’ll take it one game at a time and see how it goes,” he expressed, hinting at the team’s determination to rebound.

The defeat left the Black Stars in a precarious position at the bottom of Group B, with a challenging path ahead. Their upcoming clash against Egypt on Thursday now carries heightened significance as they seek to revive their tournament prospects.

As the Black Stars regroup, Ayew’s introspective analysis and call for improved focus underscore the team’s resolve to overcome adversity. The upcoming matches are not just games but opportunities for redemption, a chance to transform disappointment into triumph on the grand stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.
