Ademola Lookman emerged as the hero in a captivating encounter as Nigeria secured a thrilling 2-0 victory over Cameroon, propelling them into the quarterfinals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Head coach Jose Peseiro wisely reinstated the successful starting lineup from the triumphant match against Cote d’Ivoire, featuring the talents of Alex Iwobi, William Troost-Ekong, Moses Simon, and Zaidu Sanusi.

This strategic decision paid dividends, fostering a stronger rapport among the Super Eagles players, who demonstrated remarkable cohesion from the outset. In the early stages of the game, Nigeria displayed an attacking prowess that should have yielded an early goal, with Semi Ajayi finding the net, only to be denied by VAR due to an offside call.

Despite the setback, the Super Eagles maintained their focus and eventually broke the deadlock when Victor Osimhen capitalized on a lapse in the Cameroonian defense. Osimhen skillfully dispossessed Jean-Charles Castelletto and swiftly assisted Lookman, who clinically finished with a first-time effort.

With this triumph, Nigeria advances to the AFCON quarterfinals for the first time since 2019, marking a significant achievement for the three-time champions. The quarterfinal clash awaits them, where they are set to face Angola, who secured their spot with a commanding 3-0 victory over Namibia in the round of 16.

The Super Eagles, buoyed by their recent success, look poised to continue their pursuit of glory in the continental championship. As the competition unfolds, fans eagerly anticipate the unfolding drama and excitement that defines the essence of AFCON.
