The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is actively pursuing Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo, hoping to convince him to switch his international allegiance.
The 18-year-old, having only represented England at the youth level, is eligible to play for Ghana.
Randy Abbey, a member of the executive council of the Ghana FA, tells the Times in UK that, “The Ghana Football Association is interested in monitoring, attracting, and persuading all eligible talents for its various national teams. Kobbie is definitely one of such incredible talents, and the Association will love to work with him and many like him home and abroad.”
The interest from Ghana follows Mainoo’s outstanding performance against Wolves, where he scored the 97th-minute winner in a thrilling 4-3 victory for Manchester United. Mainoo’s international decision remains uncertain, but if Ghana succeeds in securing his commitment, it would pose a significant challenge for Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions.
Since making his breakthrough into Erik ten Hag’s senior first-team earlier this year, Mainoo has scored two goals in 15 games in all competitions.
He still has up to three-and-a-half years left on his contract with Manchester United.
