The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has confirmed that Black Stars head coach Otto Addo and his assistant coaches, Fatau Dauda and John Paintsil, are safe following a road accident on Sunday morning.
The incident occurred as the coaching team was returning to Accra after attending the FC Samartex vs. Nsoatreman FC match at the new TNA Sports Stadium on Saturday, August 31, 2024. Images circulating on social media showed the extensive damage to their vehicle, with goalkeeper coach Fatau Dauda seen walking past the wrecked car.
The GFA issued a statement providing details of the accident, stating, “The Ghana Football Association (GFA) wishes to inform the general public that members of the Black Stars technical team were involved in a road accident earlier today while returning from Tarkwa. The team had been on an official assignment, observing the Champion of Champions clash between FC Samartex 1996 and Nsoatreman FC.
“The vehicle carrying Head Coach Otto Addo, Assistant Coach John Paintsil, and Goalkeepers Trainer Fatawu Dauda, a Land Cruiser with registration number GR 6521-21, avoided a head-on collision with a pickup truck that veered into their lane, resulting in some damage to the vehicle.
“We are happy to report that all three members of the technical team are in stable condition and will undergo further medical assessments, as a precautionary measure, upon their return to Accra.”
The Black Stars will kick off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
