“Having the chance to play with Andre Ayew in the national team was a big honour for me” – Elisha Owusu

Ghanaian midfielder Elisha Owusu has expressed his admiration for Black Stars captain Andre Ayew, describing the opportunity to share the pitch with him as a “big honour” since his debut for the national team.

Owusu made his first appearance for Ghana during the 2022 FIFA World Cup playoff against Nigeria, coming on in the second leg of the tie. Since then, he has earned nine more caps, including his recent involvement in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola and Niger in September.

In an interview with Flashscore, the 26-year-old revealed his admiration for former Black Stars midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng during his childhood.

“Growing up, I used to watch Kevin-Prince Boateng a lot. I loved him as a kid,” Owusu said. “Andre Ayew also, because when you’re from France, he is the ‘big, big’ man. Having the chance to play with him in the national team was a big honour for me.”

Owusu has been a key player for AJ Auxerre, playing a pivotal role in their promotion to Ligue 1 at the end of the 2023/24 season. Now, the midfielder is focused on helping his team secure their place in the French top flight.

“We need to stay together. Even though we’ve lost some games, we’ve shown the quality to play in Ligue 1, so we need to build on that,” he said. “We also need to pay attention to the small details. The coach gives us confidence, and we have a strong team, so we just have to keep going.”

Owusu’s performances for both club and country continue to highlight his growing influence in midfield, with his sights set on ensuring Auxerre’s survival in Ligue 1 and maintaining his place in the Black Stars squad.
