The Minister for Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, has revealed that the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is considering Ghana as the next host for the prestigious CAF Women’s Champions League.
According to Ussif, CAF reached out to the ministry to explore the possibility of bringing the tournament to Ghana, marking a significant opportunity for the country to showcase its sporting infrastructure.
The Women’s Champions League, which was introduced in 2021, has already been hosted by Egypt, Morocco, and Côte d’Ivoire over the past three editions.
Speaking to the Parliamentary Select Committee on Sports, Ussif confirmed Ghana’s candidacy for the tournament, citing the country’s robust sports facilities as a key factor in CAF’s interest.
“CAF wrote to us, expressing their interest in having us host the Women’s Champions League,” Ussif stated. “This is because they have seen that we have the necessary facilities, thanks to what we achieved during the African Games.”
Ghana’s track record in women’s football is notable, with two clubs having competed in the CAF Women’s Champions League. Hasaacas Ladies reached the final in the inaugural edition in 2021, finishing as runners-up, while Ampem Darkoa Ladies secured fourth place in the 2022 edition.
In addition to the Champions League bid, Ussif also confirmed that Ghana will host the upcoming African Athletics Championships next year, further solidifying the country’s growing reputation as a prime destination for major continental sporting events.
“The African Athletics Championships is also coming to Ghana next year,” Ussif announced.
The Minister made these revelations during a session in Parliament, where they were discussing sports-related matters, including a petition submitted by the Save Ghana Football Forum in February.
