Ghana Football Association (GFA) Executive Council member Nana Oduro Sarfo has revealed that Premier League clubs are currently not receiving any financial benefits from the television broadcasts of the league.
Following the 2023/24 season, the GFA parted ways with StarTimes, the previous broadcast partner, due to a breach of contract. Currently, stations such as Metro TV, NET2 TV, AFA Sports, Original TV, and Globe TV air the Ghana Premier League matches.
However, Sarfo disclosed that the revenue generated from these broadcasts is not enough to provide financial support to the clubs. “Ghana Premier League clubs receive no financial gains from the current TV broadcasts of the league. There is an EXCO meeting scheduled for Tuesday to explore possible financial solutions for clubs,” Sarfo said in an interview with Kumasi-based Oyerepa FM.
The GFA is expected to hold discussions on ways to increase revenue, especially to assist clubs struggling financially.
Meanwhile, fans and analysts have raised concerns about the quality of television coverage, arguing that it diminishes the appeal of the matches to viewers.
