Former Ghana winger Laryea Kingston has placed Michael Essien ahead of Thomas Partey in the debate over Ghana’s greatest midfielder.
The comparison between the two players has sparked discussions in recent months, with fans and pundits weighing their individual merits.
In an interview with Joy Sports, Kingston acknowledged Partey’s talent but highlighted Essien’s achievements with Chelsea as a defining factor that sets him apart.
“They both have their strengths and weaknesses, but for me, I was privileged to play alongside Michael Essien,” Kingston said.
“We all know what he achieved at Chelsea during a period when they had an exceptionally strong team. He was a consistent starter, playing week in, week out.
“Partey is also exceptional and has done well, but for me, Michael Essien was on another level,” he added.
Essien, who retired in 2020, had an illustrious career, winning the UEFA Champions League, two Premier League titles, multiple FA Cups, and League Cups. He played for elite clubs including Chelsea, Real Madrid, and AC Milan, cementing his legacy as one of Africa’s finest midfielders.
Thomas Partey, meanwhile, is regarded as one of Arsenal’s standout players and has won the UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and La Liga title during his time with Atlético Madrid.
