Black Stars forward Antoine Semenyo has declared former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien as the greatest Ghanaian to ever play in the English Premier League.

Speaking to BR Football, the Bournemouth striker was asked to name the best Ghanaian footballer to have graced the Premier League, and he had no doubts about his choice.

“[It] has to be Michael Essien. I want to say Asamoah Gyan just for what he’s done at Sunderland but yeah, Michael Essien, he’s the GOAT,” Semenyo said.

Essien, who played for Chelsea from 2005 to 2014, was instrumental in the club’s success under Jose Mourinho, winning multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and the UEFA Champions League in 2012. His versatility, physicality, and ability to score stunning long-range goals made him a fan favorite at Stamford Bridge.

However, Semenyo’s choice is sure to spark debate among Ghanaian football fans, as several other Black Stars legends have left their mark on the Premier League. Tony Yeboah’s thunderous strikes for Leeds United, Sulley Muntari’s contributions at Portsmouth, Asamoah Gyan’s electrifying spell at Sunderland, and the longevity of the Ayew brothers—Andre and Jordan—are all part of Ghana’s rich football legacy in England.

While many might agree with Semenyo’s pick, others may argue that Yeboah’s spectacular goals or Gyan’s impact at Sunderland deserve equal recognition.

Do you agree with Semenyo’s assertion, or do you believe another Ghanaian deserves the title of the greatest to play in the Premier League?
