“I felt bad after the first game against Italy during the 2006 World Cup” – Osei Kuffour reflects on emotional exit from Black Stars

Former Ghanaian defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has opened up about the emotional challenge of leaving the Black Stars, describing it as one of the most difficult moments of his career.

The ex-Bayern Munich star played a key role in Ghana’s qualification for their maiden FIFA World Cup in 2006. However, his tournament experience took a tough turn during the Black Stars’ opening match against eventual champions Italy. A misplaced back pass from Kuffour led to a goal, contributing to Ghana’s 2-0 defeat.

As a result, he was dropped from the squad for Ghana’s second group-stage match and was also left out of the lineup for the crucial Round of 16 clash against Brazil.

Reflecting on that period, Kuffour admitted the situation was painful but ultimately paved the way for others.

“I felt bad after the first game against Italy during the 2006 World Cup, but being dropped for the second game opened the door for others,” he told Sporty FM.

Despite believing he had played one of his best games against Italy, the costly mistake left a lasting impact on his international career.

“I played one of my best games against Italy, but that mistake… and after the tournament, I told my management I could not play for the national team anymore,” he added.

Kuffour, who earned 54 caps for Ghana and scored three goals, remains one of the nation’s most decorated defenders, having won multiple domestic and international titles with Bayern Munich, including the UEFA Champions League.
