Former Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has opened up about his mixed emotions during Ghana’s historic debut at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, revealing that despite a costly mistake against Italy, he believes he played one of his best games in the tournament.

The ex-Bayern Munich star played a crucial role in helping Ghana qualify for their first-ever World Cup, cementing his status as one of the country’s most accomplished defenders. However, his experience at the tournament took a dramatic turn in the opening group-stage match against eventual champions Italy.

Ghana, making their first appearance on football’s biggest stage, were hoping to make a strong impression against a formidable Italian side featuring stars like Andrea Pirlo, Francesco Totti, and Fabio Cannavaro. Kuffour, one of the most experienced members of the squad, was expected to marshal the defense against the Azzurri’s attacking threats.

Despite putting in a solid performance, his night was overshadowed by a costly error. A misplaced back pass gifted Italy their second goal in the 2-0 defeat, and the mistake ultimately had severe consequences for his tournament involvement.

“I felt bad after the first game against Italy during the 2006 World Cup, but being dropped for the second game opened the door for others,” Kuffour told Sporty FM.

Following the error, he was dropped from the starting XI for Ghana’s next match against the Czech Republic and was also left out of the crucial Round of 16 fixture against Brazil, where Ghana bowed out after a 3-0 loss.

Kuffour, who had won multiple Bundesliga titles and the UEFA Champions League with Bayern Munich, admitted that the experience was a tough pill to swallow.

“I played one of my best games against Italy, but that mistake… and after the tournament, I told my management I could not play for the national team anymore,” he added.

Despite the heartbreak, Kuffour remains one of Ghana’s greatest-ever defenders. He earned 54 caps for the Black Stars, scoring three goals, and played a key role in Ghana’s football rise on the international stage.
