Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka, currently on loan at Augsburg from Brentford, is gearing up for the much-anticipated Unity Cup 2025, a tournament that will feature Nigeria, Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad & Tobago.

Set to take place at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, the tournament promises to reignite the fierce rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, which will unfold not only on the football pitch but also in a light-hearted jollof rice competition, where both nations will battle for culinary supremacy.

In an entertaining exchange with Ghanaian outlet Joy Sports, Onyeka didn’t hesitate when the topic of jollof rice came up, staunchly declaring, “No, Nigeria, sorry,” as he dismissed the suggestion that Ghana’s jollof was superior.

The Ghanaian journalist jokingly retorted, “That’s not up for debate,” but Onyeka remained unwavering, replying with a smile, “No, we will see in May.”

The playful back-and-forth highlights the spirited nature of Nigeria-Ghana encounters, transcending sport and extending into culture.

Unity Cup Excitement

Onyeka, who could feature for Nigeria in the upcoming tournament, expressed his enthusiasm for the return of the Unity Cup after a long break. “There’s always a big rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana, and it’s great to play this cup to bring the countries together,” he said. “Hopefully, we win against Ghana.”

Tournament Details

The Unity Cup 2025, hosted at Brentford’s Community Stadium, will be a vibrant celebration of African and Caribbean culture, combining football, food, music, and comedy. The tournament will kick off on May 27 with a historic semi-final featuring Trinidad & Tobago against Jamaica—the first of its kind on UK soil.

The following day, May 28, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face off against Ghana’s Black Stars in a thrilling second semi-final, rekindling a 74-year rivalry between the two African football powerhouses, who collectively boast seven Africa Cup of Nations titles.

The tournament concludes on May 31, with the losers of the semi-finals battling it out for third place before the grand final to crown the Unity Cup champion.

Jollof Rice Challenge

Off the field, the Nigeria-Ghana rivalry takes on an added dimension, as jollof rice aficionados prepare for a friendly but competitive showdown, making the Unity Cup a unique celebration of football and cultural pride.
