Asante Kotoko part ways with ‘Marcelo-like’ defender Kwasi Asante after failing to play a single game in 5 months

Asante Kotoko have officially terminated the contract of defender Kwasi Asante just five months after his arrival during the January 2025 transfer window.

The decision was reached on mutual terms after the 29-year-old failed to make a single competitive appearance for the Porcupine Warriors due to a string of injuries that kept him sidelined throughout his stay.

Asante, a former player of Guinea’s Hafia FC and Tanzanian giants Simba SC, was signed to bolster Kotoko’s defence in the second half of the season. Known for his versatility and strength as a left-back, the Ghanaian defender was expected to bring both quality and experience to the squad.

However, his time in Kumasi was marred by recurring fitness issues. Shortly after his arrival, he picked up a series of injuries that prevented him from participating in full training or matchday squads. Despite undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of the club’s medical staff, Asante was unable to make a full recovery.

Sources within the club have confirmed that after weeks of deliberation, both parties agreed to terminate the contract, with Kotoko offering compensation as part of the agreement.

“Asante Kotoko and Kwasi Asante have mutually decided to terminate the contract. The player has been compensated and is now a free agent,” a source close to the club disclosed.

Now unattached, Asante will turn his attention to recovery and is expected to seek new opportunities once he regains full fitness ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The termination brings an unfortunate end to a move that once held promise for both the club and player, as Kotoko continue restructuring their squad under head coach Abdul Karim Zito.
