Former Ghana Football Association chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe has stated that Otto Addo should have stepped down as Black Stars head coach after failing to qualify the team for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
His comments follow Addo’s recent dismissal after Ghana’s back-to-back defeats to Austria and Germany during the March international window. The Black Stars suffered a heavy 5-1 loss in Vienna before falling 2-1 in Stuttgart, results that intensified scrutiny on the coach.
Addo had already come under significant pressure after Ghana’s disappointing AFCON qualifying campaign, where the team failed to win a single match, recording three defeats and three draws—their first failure to qualify for the tournament in over two decades.
Despite that setback, the 50-year-old guided Ghana to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the country’s fifth appearance at the global showpiece.
However, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes the former Borussia Dortmund coach should have taken responsibility earlier and stepped aside.
“After he failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, I said to myself that he cannot handle the Black Stars,” he told Graphic Sports.
He further described the decision to sack Addo as both justified and delayed.
“The decision is right and long overdue. He should have realised he wouldn’t be able to handle the team and resigned after failing in key matches, rather than waiting to be sacked,” he added.
With Addo now out of the role, the Ghana Football Association is expected to name a new head coach in the coming days as preparations continue for upcoming friendlies against Mexico and Wales.
