Antoine Semenyo has delivered an honest reflection on his international allegiance, revealing that representing Ghana national football team was never a difficult choice due to his limited prospects with England national football team.
Speaking on the AllOutFootball Podcast, the England-born forward admitted he was not part of England’s long-term plans, making Ghana’s approach in 2021 a clear and timely opportunity.
“I was never really in the England rankings like that anyway. Ghana came in 2021, and I can’t turn down playing first team for Ghana, so it was such an easy decision,” he said.
Since making the switch, Semenyo has become an important figure for the Black Stars, earning his debut at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and continuing to build his international career ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Now starring for Manchester City, the 26-year-old is enjoying one of the best spells of his career, further strengthening his case as a key player for Ghana on the global stage.
Beyond footballing reasons, Semenyo highlighted the emotional impact of his decision, describing the overwhelming pride it brought to his family.
“My dad was so happy… everyone in my family supports Ghana. It was crazy,” he added.
His comments shed light on the reality faced by many dual-nationality players, where career opportunities and personal identity often intersect. For Semenyo, the equation was simple—Ghana offered belief, opportunity, and a chance to represent his roots at the highest level.
With Ghana set to face England, Croatia, and Panama in Group L, Semenyo will be eager to turn his club form into match-winning performances as the Black Stars aim to make a strong statement on the world stage.
