Black Stars goalkeeper Benjamin Asare has said he felt the pain of Ghana’s heavy 5-1 defeat to Austria despite being on the bench during the international friendly.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Deloris Frimpong Manso on The Delay Show, Asare said the result affected him because he sees himself as part of the team whether he is starting or not.
“I’m also part of the team; we went out to play for victory for everyone to be happy but it turned out differently,” he said.
Asare added that he never felt happy seeing Ghana concede goals during the game, stressing that the same situation could easily have happened to him if he had been in post.
“I wasn’t happy about the fact that my senior goalkeeper was conceding because it could have been me. When the team performs well, I’m happy; when it doesn’t, I feel the pain,” he stated.
The goalkeeper in post during the defeat was Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who endured a difficult evening against an Austria side coached by Ralf Rangnick. Austria dominated the game with their aggressive pressing and attacking movement as players including Marcel Sabitzer and Marko Arnautović caused problems for the Black Stars throughout the encounter.
Following the defeat, Asare was handed the opportunity to start in Ghana’s next game against Germany, where the Black Stars secured a 2-1 victory.
The performance further strengthened discussions about Asare’s growing role in the national team setup, with fans praising his calmness and confidence between the posts.
Before earning recognition with the Black Stars, Asare built his career in Ghana’s domestic league, featuring for Great Olympics before securing a move to Accra Hearts of Oak, where he established himself as one of the Ghana Premier League’s standout goalkeepers.
