Black Stars defender Marvin Senaya has broken his silence following Ghana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the opportunity to represent the country on football’s biggest stage as one of the greatest honours of his career.
The Marvin Senaya, who plays for AJ Auxerre, expressed pride in wearing Ghana’s colours despite the disappointment of the team’s early exit from the tournament.
Senaya, who opted to represent Ghana ahead of Togo at international level, highlighted the emotional significance of playing for the Black Stars and representing millions of supporters around the world.
“Wearing the colours of Ghana at the World Cup is a tremendous honour. Behind this jersey, there is a history, roots, a culture, and an entire people that I am proud to represent,” Senaya wrote.
Ghana’s World Cup campaign ended in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia at the Kansas City Stadium. Jhon Arias’ early strike proved decisive as the Black Stars were unable to find an equaliser despite pushing for a comeback.
The match was also a difficult moment for Senaya personally after he was forced off with an injury in the first half. Head coach Carlos Queiroz later identified the right-back’s substitution as a key turning point, with Ghana briefly losing defensive organisation before Colombia took advantage.
Despite the disappointment, Senaya emerged as one of Ghana’s standout performers during the tournament.
The 25-year-old impressed throughout the group stage and was recognised in Opta’s World Cup Group Stage Best XI after recording outstanding defensive numbers. He topped the tournament’s tackling charts with 18 attempted tackles and 11 successful challenges, including a highly praised display during Ghana’s goalless draw against England.
Senaya’s performances have strengthened his position as one of Ghana’s most promising defensive options and provided optimism for the future of the Black Stars.
As Ghana now turns attention to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, Senaya is expected to remain a key figure in the national team’s rebuilding process as the Black Stars look to build on the positives from their World Cup campaign.
