Black Stars right-back Marvin Senaya is set to undergo surgery after suffering a serious hamstring injury that has ruled him out for an extended period following Ghana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Marvin Senaya suffered the injury during Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 at the Kansas City Stadium, forcing him off the pitch just 13 minutes into the crucial knockout encounter.
The early setback proved costly for the Black Stars, as head coach Carlos Queiroz later revealed that Senaya’s withdrawal disrupted Ghana’s defensive structure at a key moment of the match.
According to the Portuguese coach, the reshuffle following the right-back’s injury created a brief lapse in organisation, which Colombia exploited to score the only goal of the game and secure qualification to the Round of 16.
Before the unfortunate injury, Senaya had been one of Ghana’s standout performers at the tournament.
The AJ Auxerre defender started all four of Ghana’s matches at the World Cup and played a major role in a disciplined defensive unit that kept clean sheets against Panama and England.
His performances earned widespread praise, with the 25-year-old being recognised among the best defenders during the group stage after producing impressive tackling numbers and consistent displays against top opposition.
Taking to social media after the injury news, Senaya admitted the setback was difficult but promised to return stronger.
“This injury means I need surgery, and it will keep me away from the game for a while,” Senaya wrote.
“But believe me when I say this: I will come back stronger than you have ever seen me before.”
The defender is expected to return to France to undergo the required medical procedure as he begins his rehabilitation process.
The injury represents a major setback for both Senaya and the Black Stars, but the right-back remains determined to overcome the challenge and continue building on a memorable World Cup campaign.
