Azerbaijani Premier League side Kapaz PFK have completed the signing of Ghanaian-born Portuguese striker Asumah Abubakar, with the experienced forward signing a contract that will keep him at the club until the end of the season.
The 29-year-old joins Kapaz from Austrian outfit Austria Lustenau, bringing with him a wealth of experience gained across several European leagues. The club will be hoping his versatility, movement and goalscoring instincts provide a significant boost to their attack for the remainder of the campaign.
Abubakar began his professional career in the Netherlands, making his senior debut for Willem II on April 2, 2016, when he came off the bench in a 3-2 Eredivisie defeat to FC Twente.
He later joined MVV Maastricht for the 2018/19 season before moving to Swiss Challenge League side SC Kriens, where he enjoyed the most prolific spell of his career. The striker scored his first professional goal against FC Aarau on July 28, 2019, and finished the campaign as the league’s third-highest scorer.
Abubakar maintained his impressive form in the following season, once again ending the campaign among the league’s top scorers before being named the Swiss Challenge League’s Best Player.
His performances earned him moves to several clubs, including Lugano, Luzern, Grasshoppers, Australia’s Brisbane Roar and Maltese champions Birkirkara, before spending time with Austria Lustenau ahead of his latest switch to Azerbaijan.
Kapaz have now secured the services of a striker with extensive international experience and a proven track record across multiple leagues. The club will be hoping Abubakar’s quality and experience help strengthen their attacking options as they aim for a successful finish to the season.
