Ghanaian youngster Gideon Otabil has joined Portuguese giants FC Porto on loan from Ghanaian third-tier side Maverick SC, in a move that could lead to a permanent transfer next year.
The 18-year-old forward has completed his move to Porto and will begin his development with the club’s Under-19 team, which has already started its title defence with a home victory over CD Feirense.
The agreement between Porto and Maverick includes an option for the Portuguese club to make Otabil’s move permanent at the end of the 2026/27 season.
Otabil arrives in Portugal with high expectations and is eager to make the most of the opportunity to continue his development at one of Europe’s most respected clubs.
Speaking after completing the move, the left-footed attacker described joining Porto as one of the biggest opportunities of his young career.
“Playing for FC Porto is one of the best opportunities one can have, so I’m very excited. It’s the perfect setting for my career,” Otabil said.
The young Ghanaian also acknowledged the challenge of adapting to a new country and footballing environment but expressed confidence that he would settle quickly.
“Adapting is always difficult, but I hope to quickly form friendships with my teammates. The city and the food are fantastic here, so I think I’ll be able to adapt over time,” he added.
Otabil revealed that his journey has been driven by a long-standing ambition to play for major clubs.
He participated in several youth tournaments in Ghana, where his performances helped him attract attention and earn opportunities with the national team.
“I participated in several tournaments to demonstrate my potential, always very focused on pursuing my dream of reaching big clubs, as is the case with FC Porto,” he explained.
The teenager is now determined to repay the faith shown in him by Porto by working hard and enjoying his football.
“FC Porto is a great club and being here is a privilege. I’m obliged to always give my best so that everything goes well. Every game counts, so I always want to give my best, work hard and have fun playing,” he said.
Otabil also appealed to Porto supporters to give him a warm welcome, saying he enjoys playing in front of passionate crowds.
“I hope the fans welcome me warmly and are always with us. I love playing in stadiums with great atmospheres; it brings out some of the magic in my football,” he added.
The move represents another promising pathway for young Ghanaian talent into European football, with Otabil now hoping to establish himself at Porto and earn a permanent contract at the end of his loan spell.
