Medeama SC head coach Ibrahim Tanko has declared his readiness to take charge of the Black Stars if the Ghana Football Association (GFA) considers him the right candidate for the vacant head coach position.
Ghana are currently searching for a new substantive coach following reports that Carlos Queiroz will not continue in the role after failing to reach an agreement with the GFA and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation over his contract demands.
The Black Stars are expected to return to action in September when they begin preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, making the appointment of a new coach a priority for Ghana’s football authorities.
Tanko has emerged as one of the names being considered for the position, having previously worked with the national team setup as an assistant coach under Kwesi Appiah. He also gained experience as head coach of the Black Meteors, Ghana’s U23 national team.
Speaking in an interview with Asempa FM, the Medeama trainer said he would welcome the opportunity to serve his country at the senior level if given the necessary backing.
“If the Black Stars coaching opportunity comes and the authorities believe I’m the right man for the job, why not?” Tanko said.
The experienced Ghanaian coach has built a strong reputation domestically, guiding Medeama SC while also gaining valuable experience from his work with Ghana’s youth national teams.
His potential appointment would come at a crucial period for the Black Stars, who are looking to rebuild after failing to qualify for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco and aiming to secure a place at the 2027 tournament in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.
If appointed, Tanko would become the latest coach to lead the Black Stars under GFA President Kurt Okraku’s administration, which has already seen several changes in the national team’s technical leadership.
