Ghanaian defender Abdul Mumin is on the verge of completing his move to Girona after arriving in the city and successfully undergoing his medical with the Spanish club.
The 28-year-old centre-back is expected to sign his contract in the coming hours, barring any last-minute issues.
In a heartfelt open letter, the 28-year-old centre-back expressed his gratitude to the club, its fans, and the wider Vallecas community as he prepares to leave on a free transfer.
“Today I have to say goodbye, and my heart is full of sadness,” Mumin wrote.
“I don’t even know where to start. I have so many good memories from my time here in Vallecas. I’ve met wonderful people. I’ve forged friendships that I know will last a lifetime.”
Mumin joined Rayo Vallecano from Vitoria Guimarães in 2022 and quickly became a fan favourite. His physical style, defensive reliability, and commitment to the cause made him a key figure in the club’s La Liga campaigns.
“From the very first day, I felt at home. I never felt out of place,” he reflected. “I only wish I could have been more.”
The Ghana international also paid tribute to the club’s unsung heroes, acknowledging the staff who work behind the scenes.
“I also want to thank the people we don’t always see, but who make this club what it is. To the workers, the staff, the kit managers, the cooks, the cleaners: thank you for the affection, for getting up early, for the advice, and for treating me like a member of the family. You are the soul of Rayo.”
Mumin spoke about the unique bond between the club and its community, describing what it means to represent a neighbourhood.
“You taught me what it means to play for a badge that represents a neighbourhood. For pride. For family. For the people who give it their all. Suffering for something is loving it!”
Mumin will join Girona as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Rayo Vallecano. He moved to Rayo in 2022 from Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães in a deal reportedly worth around €1.5 million.
Mumin looking to return to his best
The move presents Mumin with an opportunity to rebuild his career after a serious knee injury disrupted his progress.
The Ghana international suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March 2025, ruling him out for close to a year.
He eventually returned to action with Rayo last season, making three appearances and playing 78 minutes in total, including one start.
Despite his limited playing time, his return was enough to put him back in contention for the Ghana national team.
