Ghanaian striker Nathan Opoku has declared himself ‘fit, excited and ready to go’ after signing for Northampton from Leicester City on Friday.
The Ghanian youth international started out in the in the American college system, where he scored 11 goals in 25 games to help Syracuse University to its first NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Championship. He then moved to Leicester before loan spells in Belgium and with Newport.
Opoku, who’s taken the number 17 shirt, said: “I was at Leicester for three years and I’ve had my ups and downs. I had a big injury, which put me down for a bit, but I’ve been back playing football for almost a year now.
“I went to Newport last season and got some minutes in my legs and now I feel back to my normal self. I wanted a new challenge and I spoke to the manager here and he told me about the project and how I can impact the team. I think I’m a great fit for what he wants.
“I’ve been all of the place but Northampton isn’t far from Leicester so it still feels like home. I’m excited for it and I’m ready to get settled in and work with the boys.”
Opoku featured heavily for Leicester in pre-season and scored a couple of goals, meaning he comes to Sixfields ready to go straightaway.
“Pre-season has been good at Leicester,” he added. “I have been with the first-team squad and got some minutes, I got on the scoresheet too. I enjoyed working with Russell Martin, he’s a good guy and a good coach. I am fit and ready to play my part.
“I think I can bring a lot to the table. I’m obviously a striker so I want to score goals, but I also want to be a team player and the most important thing is to win. I want to bring my team-mates into play and hopefully score goals and help the team do well.”
