The Minority in Parliament has called for the immediate dismissal and prosecution of Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams over his alleged involvement in the ongoing visa scandal linked to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The demand follows President John Dramani Mahama’s suspension of National Sports Authority (NSA) Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who is under investigation over allegations surrounding a $623,000 visa facilitation fee.
Addressing a press conference in Parliament on Wednesday, Ranking Member of the Sports Committee Vincent Ekow Assafuah alleged that some officials facilitated visa applications for individuals who were not employees of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
According to Assafuah, a cover letter was allegedly prepared to present outsiders as ministry staff to support their visa applications.
He said the allegations raise serious concerns about the procedures used to process travel arrangements for people who travelled to the United States during the World Cup.
The Minority also called for the dismissal and prosecution of the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), alleging that he was involved in the visa arrangements.
Assafuah urged investigators to expand the probe beyond the suspended NSA Director-General and determine whether other public officials played a role in the alleged scheme.
He maintained that any official found culpable should be removed from office and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Minority further called for a comprehensive investigation into how the visa facilitation funds were approved, who benefited from the arrangement and whether due process was followed.
President Mahama has described Ampofo Ankrah’s suspension as an administrative measure pending the outcome of investigations, with authorities continuing to examine the allegations surrounding Ghana’s World Cup travel arrangements.
