Ghanaian-born Spain international Iñaki Williams has described social media as a source of negativity, advising his younger brother Nico Williams to stay away from it if it begins to affect his peace of mind.
Iñaki, who plays for Athletic Bilbao alongside Nico, stressed the importance of protecting one’s mental well-being from the pressures and distractions associated with online platforms.
“Social media is society’s garbage dump. I always tell Nico: if it’s keeping you from sleeping, stay away from it. You’ll live more peacefully,” Iñaki Williams said.
The Athletic Bilbao captain’s comments highlight the potential impact of social media on the mental well-being of professional footballers, who often face intense public scrutiny, criticism and expectations from supporters.
For players competing at the highest level, online platforms can provide opportunities to connect with fans, promote their careers and share personal experiences. However, they can also expose footballers to negative comments, abuse and constant public judgement.
Iñaki’s advice to Nico reflects his belief that personal peace and mental well-being should take priority over the pressures of maintaining an online presence.
The Williams brothers have established themselves as prominent figures in Spanish football, representing Athletic Bilbao at club level, while Nico has also gained international recognition with Spain.
Through his message, Iñaki has encouraged his younger brother to maintain a healthy relationship with social media and avoid allowing online activity to interfere with his sleep and peace of mind.
